Inter Miami, the Major League Soccer (MLS) team, marked a momentous celebration in partnership with Royal Caribbean International on Tuesday. The event, held at the Port of Miami, featured none other than soccer icon Lionel Messi and his teammates, who played a central role in the traditional naming ceremony of the cruise line’s latest ship, the Icon of the Seas. With a length of 1,198 feet, the vessel holds the title of being the longest in the world and is set to embark on its maiden voyage this weekend.

During the ceremony, Lionel Messi took the spotlight, placing a football atop a stand to initiate the customary breaking of a champagne bottle against the ship’s bow. This maritime tradition is believed to bring good luck to the ship and its passengers. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner expressed his gratitude, stating, “It’s a great honour for me, and I know what it means for the city of Miami and the entire world.” Messi officially named the ship “Icon of the Seas,” offering blessings for the vessel and those who will sail on it.

In addition to the nautical festivities, Inter Miami unveiled their new black kit for the upcoming 2024 season during an event inside the ship’s theatre. Messi and his teammates, adorned in pink zippered sweatshirts, revealed the sleek black jersey accented with the team’s traditional pink and featuring the prominent Royal Caribbean logo across the chest. The occasion showcased the fusion of sports and maritime glamour, symbolizing a unique intersection of two globally celebrated entities.
